Children: The first principle of our children's classes is that young learners must enjoy language learning in order to be motivated. We also believe that if a child's first language attempts are met with success, that child is much more likely to approach future language learning opportunities with optimism and enthusiasm. Therefore, our classes employ games, songs, rhymes, play and other age-appropriate activities in a fun, immersion environment. All of our classes are theoretically informed from both a linguistic and developmental perspective. As with our adult classes, our children’s classes employ the Communicative Approach which allows young students to respond to spoken Chinese that is meaningful and interesting to them from the very start.
HC has three options for parents who would like to see their child get an early start on their Chinese language education. First of all we offer at-cost children's and toddler classes directly at The Chinatown Community Cultural Center (CCCC). Second, our Traveling Teacher program also provides classes at seven area schools. Finally, for families squeezed for time, we also provide private tutoring and small group classes. Classes at Our Locations: HC offers low-cost Chinese language toddler and children’s classes at the Chinatown Community Cultural Center (CCCC) (616 H. St. NW Suite 201, Washigton, DC 20001). The CCCC is a few steps from the centrally located Gallery Place/Chinatown metro station (at the intersection of the red, yellow, and green lines). Your child will have a wonderful time learning basic Chinese in our game and song-based immersion classes. We welcome all parents to sign up their child whenever you like, and we are happy to pro-rate if you start the session late. Traveling Teachers Program: After-school Enrichment and During-the-School-Day Classes at Local Schools
HC’s After-School Enrichment and During-the-School-Day Program currently provides classes at eight area schools, including Aidan Montesori School, Beauvoir The National Cathedral School, Browne Academy, Capital Hill Day School, National Presbyterian School, Northeast Stars Montessori Learning Center, Saint Patrick's Episcopal School, and Tauxemont Coorperative Preschool. The content of our classes are the same as those offered at our own locations, but we also take into account the context in which we are working. We therefore stress such things as flexibility and respect for the classrooms in which we are working so that our offerings can merge into our host school’s ongoing program without disruption. Private/Small Group Tutoring
Some families don’t have the flexibility or time to come to one of our classes, but would still like their child to get an early start on his/her Chinese language education. For these families, we offer private or small group tutoring. The class content is the same as that for our group classes, but is tailored to adjust to the needs of a single or a few students. We also make private tutoring available for students who would like a tailored course of study to supplement Chinese classes provided through their school, or for older students preparing for a Chinese exam (SAT II, HSK, etc).
